queer zinester's guide to the archive

a virtual handout for queer zest zine fest attendees on how to navigate the barnard zine library, search our catalog, how we acquire zines for the collection, and all of the service we offer to the public!

getting started!

There are two zine collections: circulating stacks and special collections.

Circulating zines are located on the 2nd floor of the Milstein Center and can be borrowed by Barnard and Columbia students and members of the BorrowDirect and MaRLI networks and are also available via interlibrary loan. Barnumbia loans are semester long and are renewable 99 entire times! Pre-covid, anyone could walk in, hang out and read zines right off the shelves -- we're hoping we can do this again soon. For now, you can request zines through interlibrary loan or email us to request a scan.

Special Collections zines are available to be viewed/read/touched/etc, by making an research appointment through zines@barnard.edu! Once we've set-up a time and you arrive in-person, you'd have to fill out this form to present a "green screen" at the Barnard Gate on the west side of 117th and Broadway. One of us will walk in with you, and show you where the gender neutral bathrooms, water fountains and reading room are! We've also got a scanner in the reading room, incase you'd like to save some reading material for home.

Navigating CLIO

so many little grey boxes!

each post-it note lists the call number of the first zine in the box, and the last zine in the box -- so that we can shelve accordingly.
