  • American Journal of Undergraduate Research open access logo[The website says "open-source," rather than "open access."] "American Journal of Undergraduate Research (AJUR) is a national, independent, peer-reviewed, open-source, quarterly, multidisciplinary student research journal.” Graduate students and faculty are allowed as co-authors. Submissions are accepted anytime.
  • Apollon Apollon is "an undergraduate ejournal in the humanities focused on producing annual issues of excellent, peer reviewed work from participating colleges and universities across a range of disciplines and embracing the array of intellectual approaches valued by humanistic inquiry. We maintain a broad definition of the humanities by including within our purview English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Music, Theater, History, Classics, Art History, Design, Philosophy, Religion, Peace and Social Justice Studies, Women's Studies, and regional studies, as well as papers from associated disciplines that engage in humanistic forms of inquiry such as qualitative and theoretical work in Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology, among others."
  • Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research "The Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research (BJUR) publishes original, scholarly research undertaken by undergraduates from any college or university. BJUR builds upon and strengthens Butler’s commitment to quality undergraduate research by providing an outlet for the publication of outstanding undergraduate scholarship across the humanities, social and natural sciences."
  • Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development open access logo "Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development is the first student-founded journal of its kind. Its mission is to juxtapose different disciplinary approaches in order to confront challenges of sustainable development in an innovative and creative manner. The field of sustainable development is broad and can encompass a wide variety of topics, related to the environment, economics, politics, and social life. As an interdisciplinary journal, Consilience encourages its contributors to submit articles of relevance to many fields related to the study and practice of sustainable development. It also welcomes articles from students and other authors who have never previously been published in academic journals." Articles may take the following forms: scholarly articles, opinion pieces, field notes, and photo essays.

  • Critical Theory and Social Justice Journal of Undergraduate Research (Occidental College)
    CTSJ is dedicated to providing a forum for undergraduate students to develop and share critical research and writing on the intersections of "race", "sexuality", and "nationality" as they relate to problems of social justice. The journal seeks to foster exchange of ideas across disciplines and deepen understandings of systems of injustice, and in this way advances the mission of Occidental College: to develop critical, thoughtful, and active participation in an increasingly pluralistic and conflict ridden global culture.

  • Forbes & Fifth "We accept undergraduate submissions from any accredited university in the world. These submissions can range from research articles/essays to creative writing to visual art and beyond. There is really no limit to what you can submit to Forbes & Fifth.” Published in April and December. Next submission deadline: October 2019.
  • Honors Review "The Honors Review is a nationally competitive interdisciplinary journal seeking illuminating, insightful and contemporary research at the undergraduate level. Students need not be members of Honors Programs to submit papers. The primary goal of the Honors Review is to give all undergraduates the opportunity to participate in scholarly conversations within their disciplines and to expose them to the dialogue that occurs between a journal and a contributor in editing an article for publication." Submission deadline January 14.
  • Inquiries Journal open access logo "Inquiries Journal, formerly Student Pulse, is an open-access academic journal that highlights the work of students at the undergraduate level and above. The journal publishes work across a range of academic disciplines with a particular focus on the social sciences, arts, and humanities." Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
  • International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities "International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities is a peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to the publication of outstanding scholarship by undergraduates and their mentors. The Journal accepts submissions of research articles, fiction, poetry, photography, videos, and other creative works from undergraduate students in all academic disciplines." Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
  • Journal of Integrated Social Sciences (California Lutheran University)
    Journal of Integrated Social Sciences is a web-based, peer-reviewed journal committed to the scholarly investigation of social phenomena. We especially encourage students and their faculty advisors to submit the results of their investigations.

  • Journal of Politics and Society (Columbia University)
    The Helvidius Group is a student organization at Columbia University, established in 1989 by Peter Tomassi, CC ’91, to provide a forum for undergraduate discourse on issues concerning law and public policy. The Journal of Politics & Society is the realization of that mission. Originally an annual magazine distributed to Ivy League universities and to members of Congress, it has adopted a more scholarly focus and has grown to encompass all of the social sciences. The Journal is not affiliated with or sponsored by any political organization, and it remains staunchly nonpartisan.

  • Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Excellence The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Excellence "is a journal where undergraduates have an opportunity to publish their own work and showcase their talents in any academic subject. Research, poetry, reviews, and art can be featured side-by-side as a testament to the scholarly power of undergraduate students." Submissions are always accepted.
  • Midway Review "The Midway Review publishes a print edition once a quarter, as well as several articles available only on the web. We welcome submissions from all UChicago students and alumni, as well as faculty or anyone from outside the University of Chicago interested in writing. We try to broadly cover politics and current events, cultural criticism, book and film reviews, religion, and philosophy. However, we will be happy to consider any other article or essay proposals that do not fit within these categories but are still relevant to current culture and politics." Submission deadline July 1.
  • Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research "Our mission is to support development of high-quality original undergraduate research, recognize exceptional undergraduate scholarly efforts and accomplishments, and contribute to the undergraduate learning experience. MJUR accepts submissions from all academic fields and from any undergraduate institution, national or international." Submission deadline January 15.
  • Perspectives on Undergraduate Research and Mentoring open access logo "Perspectives on Undergraduate Research and Mentoring (PURM) is an open-access, multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed online journal supporting the mission of undergraduate research and the programs that strive to provide undergraduate students opportunities to participate in scholarly activities with faculty mentors. We have moved to a themed-issue format. Each annual issue is typically released in the fall and is centered on a special topic. Please see the Call for Papers for information on the current theme." Submission deadline April 1.

  • Reinvention: An International Journal of Undergraduate Research "Reinvention is an online, peer-reviewed journal, dedicated to the publication of high-quality undergraduate student research. The journal welcomes academic articles from all disciplinary areas and all universities. All articles undergo rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and refereeing by two or three anonymous referees. Reinvention is published bi-annually and only houses papers written by undergraduate students or papers written collaboratively by undergraduate students and academics."

  • Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is a "refereed, multidisciplinary, online undergraduate journal that will advance knowledge in new scholarly arenas by presenting intellectual and reflective work by undergraduates. We seek undergraduate contributions to the burgeoning academic conversation on service learning and community-based research." Submission deadline June 30.

IRB

Institutional Review Board

Any member of the Barnard College faculty, staff, postdoctoral, and student bodies who plans to initiate research involving human subjects must submit a protocol for IRB review prior to beginning the project.

The Barnard IRB meets on the second Monday of every month while classes are in session, and as needed during the summer recess. In order to assure a timely review, please submit your application to the IRB at least two weeks before a scheduled meeting.
