• Apollon Apollon is "an undergraduate ejournal in the humanities focused on producing annual issues of excellent, peer reviewed work from participating colleges and universities across a range of disciplines and embracing the array of intellectual approaches valued by humanistic inquiry. • Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development  "Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development is the first student-founded journal of its kind. Its mission is to juxtapose different disciplinary approaches in order to confront challenges of sustainable development in an innovative and creative manner. The field of sustainable development is broad and can encompass a wide variety of topics, related to the environment, economics, politics, and social life. As an interdisciplinary journal, Consilience encourages its contributors to submit articles of relevance to many fields related to the study and practice of sustainable development. It also welcomes articles from students and other authors who have never previously been published in academic journals." Articles may take the following forms: scholarly articles, opinion pieces, field notes, and photo essays.

• Critical Theory and Social Justice Journal of Undergraduate Research (Occidental College)
  CTSJ is dedicated to providing a forum for undergraduate students to develop and share critical research and writing on the intersections of "race", "sexuality", and "nationality" as they relate to problems of social justice. The journal seeks to foster exchange of ideas across disciplines and deepen understandings of systems of injustice, and in this way advances the mission of Occidental College: to develop critical, thoughtful, and active participation in an increasingly pluralistic and conflict ridden global culture.

• Crossings (Swarthmore College) Crossings is an open-access undergraduate interdisciplinary research journal that provides a forum for discourse on feminist theory and scholarship. The title is inspired by M. Jacqui Alexander’s Pedagogies of Crossing, which takes as its basis the concept of the Middle Passage, the Crossing, to understand Black transnational feminism’s erosion of boundaries —disciplinary conventions, respectability politics, national borders, and bodies that are gendered, sexualized, and racialized, among others kinds of categories— in relation to empire and postmodernity.

• Discussions
  "Discussions accepts research papers written by current undergraduate students from accredited colleges and universities around the globe. The research can be on any topic, not limited to science or engineering. A student may submit a paper from a class, as long as his/her work presents a new and innovative idea."

• Eleven (University of California, Berkeley)
  The Undergraduate Journal of Sociology publishes excellent sociological papers written by current and recent UC Berkeley undergraduates, as well as undergraduates from across the nation and countries such as Canada and Norway. A student-run publication, the journal provides an academic forum that highlights outstanding scholarship in the social sciences. In the spirit of Marx’s Eleventh Thesis on Feuerbach that mandates one to engender constructive change, the journal offers opportunities for an intellectual space that encourages critical engagement with the world. NOTE: Our own alum, Erin Ward, is featured in Volume 5 of Eleven.

• Forbes & Fifth "We accept undergraduate submissions from any accredited university in the world. These submissions can range from research articles/essays to creative writing to visual art and beyond. There is really no limit to what you can submit to Forbes & Fifth.” Published in April and December. Next submission deadline: October 2019.
• Honors Review "The Honors Review is a nationally competitive interdisciplinary journal seeking illuminating, insightful and contemporary research at the undergraduate level. Students need not be members of Honors Programs to submit papers. The primary goal of the Honors Review is to give all undergraduates the opportunity to participate in scholarly conversations within their disciplines and to expose them to the dialogue that occurs between a journal and a contributor in editing an article for publication." Submission deadline January 14.
• Intaresia Peer-reviewed and open-access journal founded at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Intarsia is dedicated to the publication of undergraduate scholarship that addresses feminism, sexuality, sex, and gender from queer and feminist theoretical perspectives. Sponsored by the Department for Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Emory University and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship

• Inquiries Journal  "Inquiries Journal, formerly Student Pulse, is an open-access academic journal that highlights the work of students at the undergraduate level and above. The journal publishes work across a range of academic disciplines with a particular focus on the social sciences, arts, and humanities." Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.

• International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities "International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities is a peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to the publication of outstanding scholarship by undergraduates and their mentors. The Journal accepts submissions of research articles, fiction, poetry, photography, videos, and other creative works from undergraduate students in all academic disciplines." Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.

• Journal of Integrated Social Sciences (California Lutheran University)
  Journal of Integrated Social Sciences is a web-based, peer-reviewed journal committed to the scholarly investigation of social phenomena. We especially encourage students and their faculty advisors to submit the results of their investigations.

• Journal of Politics and Society (Columbia University)
  The Helvidius Group is a student organization at Columbia University, established in 1989 by Peter Tomassi, CC ’91, to provide a forum for undergraduate discourse on issues concerning law and public policy. The Journal of Politics & Society is the realization of that mission. Originally an annual magazine distributed to Ivy League universities and to members of Congress, it has adopted a more scholarly focus and has grown to encompass all of the social sciences. The Journal is not affiliated with or sponsored by any political organization, and it remains staunchly nonpartisan.

• Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Excellence The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Excellence "is a journal where undergraduates have an opportunity to publish their own work and showcase their talents in any academic subject. Research, poetry, reviews, and art can be featured side-by-side as a testament to the scholarly power of undergraduate students." Submissions are always accepted.
• Midway Review "The Midway Review publishes a print edition once a quarter, as well as several articles available only on the web. We welcome submissions from all UChicago students and alumni, as well as faculty or anyone from outside the University of Chicago interested in writing. We try to broadly cover politics and current events, cultural criticism, book and film reviews, religion, and philosophy. However, we will be happy to consider any other article or essay proposals that do not fit within these categories but are still relevant to current culture and politics." Submission deadline July 1.
• Midwest Journal of Undergraduate Research "Our mission is to support development of high-quality original undergraduate research, recognize exceptional undergraduate scholarly efforts and accomplishments, and contribute to the undergraduate learning experience. MJUR accepts submissions from all academic fields and from any undergraduate institution, national or international." Submission deadline January 15.
• Perspectives on Undergraduate Research and Mentoring  "Perspectives on Undergraduate Research and Mentoring (PURM) is an open-access, multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed online journal supporting the mission of undergraduate research and the programs that strive to provide undergraduate students opportunities to participate in scholarly activities with faculty mentors. We have moved to a themed-issue format. Each annual issue is typically released in the fall and is centered on a special topic. Please see the Call for Papers for information on the current theme." Submission deadline April 1.
• Queen City Writers

  We seek thought-provoking pieces from any disciplinary perspective that explore questions and problems related to writing, rhetoric, reading, literacy broadly conceived, popular culture and media, community discourses, and multimodal and digital composing. We expect that the work will be informed by critical conversations relevant to the topic–that is, composers should incorporate timely, pertinent research to support claims. In addition, we welcome projects that experiment with form, voice, style, and delivery.
• Reinvention: An International Journal of Undergraduate Research "Reinvention is an online, peer-reviewed journal, dedicated to the publication of high-quality undergraduate student research. The journal welcomes academic articles from all disciplinary areas and all universities. All articles undergo rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and refereeing by two or three anonymous referees. Reinvention is published bi-annually and only houses papers written by undergraduate students or papers written collaboratively by undergraduate students and academics."

• Stanford Undergraduate Research Journal
  "The Stanford Undergraduate Research Journal (SURJ) is an annual, peer-reviewed publication of research articles from all academic fields. SURJ primarily publishes work produced by Stanford undergraduates, but also publishes papers from well-qualified students at other institutions. New volumes of SURJ are released annually in print and on the web." Submission deadline January 15.
• Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research The Undergraduate Journal of Service Learning and Community-Based Research is a "refereed, multidisciplinary, online undergraduate journal that will advance knowledge in new scholarly arenas by presenting intellectual and reflective work by undergraduates. We seek undergraduate contributions to the burgeoning academic conversation on service learning and community-based research." Submission deadline June 30.

Institutional Review Board

Any member of the Barnard College faculty, staff, postdoctoral, and student bodies who plans to initiate research involving human subjects must submit a protocol for IRB review prior to beginning the project.

The Barnard IRB meets on the second Monday of every month while classes are in session, and as needed during the summer recess. In order to assure a timely review, please submit your application to the IRB at least two weeks before a scheduled meeting.
