Use CLIO, Columbia University's library catalog, to search a topic (example: carbon nanotubes)
Select an ebook on your topic, which will take you to a link for the book. Review the contents, with a focus on the book chapters. Each chapter acts as a subtopic in your larger area of interest. One of these subtopics could be a good, narrower direction for your research. You can also use references in the chapter to begin building your own collection of literature on this subtopic.
