You can use these sites to find full text of many books that are in the public domain. As a rule, that applies to books published before 1930. You can read more about that here and not every book has been digitized and your professor may want you to read a particular edition or a particular translation of a text. Still, these sites can be a good bet, especially for some classic texts.

Offers peer-reviewed annotated bibliographies on specific topics in a growing range of subject areas. There are at least 50 specific topical bibliographies in each subject area. Each of these features an introduction to the topic. Bibliographies are browseable by subject area and keyword searchable.
