Computer science research changes relatively quickly, and the most current research might be published as conference proceedings or presentations. Creating a Google and/or Google Scholar Alert can help you stay up to date on the latest research.
This is helpful for the following types of content:
To create an alert, your Barnard GBear/Gmail account should already be connected with Google Scholar.
(If you have not connected your account with Google Scholar, you can follow the instructions here: https://guides.library.barnard.edu/ComputerScience/GoogleScholar)
If you have already connected your accounts, go to Google Scholar at scholar.google.com
If your GBear account is already linked, you should see your account image in the right-hand corner of the screen.
You will use the 3 short horizontal lines in the left-hand corner of the screen to access the alerts option.
Click on the 3 short horizontal lines to access the dropdown menu and select Alerts next to the envelope icon.
Selecting alerts will take you to a page where you select the red CREATE ALERT button.
On the next page you will see a dialog box where you can type a topic of interest. On this page you can also choose an option to "Include less relevant results." I recommend not clicking that option, which means you will only receive alerts about the results most relevant to your topic.
After you type your topic into the box, you should click on the red CREATE ALERT button to finalize the alert.
On the next screen you will see the topic you added to your alerts. If you have multiple alerts set at once you will see them all listed here. You can also choose to cancel alerts when you no longer want to receive the results.
Follow these instructions to create an alert in regular Google.
