Film Journals

This isn't an exhaustive list, but rather one of the most relevant journals for Film Studies at Barnard. Most of these are available online with a BC/CU UNI (if off-campus). Most film journals will be available in the above databases, as well, but you can browse individual journals and issues with the links below.

Journal of film and video
History, theory, criticism, and aesthetics in film production from the University Film and Video Association
Adaptation: the journal of literature on screen studies Academic articles on book to screen adaptation, screen to book adaptation, popular and classic adaptations, theatre and novel screen adaptations, television, animation, soundtracks, production issues, and genres in literature on screen. Includes book and film reviews.
Bright Lights Formerly a print publication, Brights Lights is now an online film journal with many interviews and industry essays.
Cineaste Published quarterly. Cineaste publishes reviews, in-depth analyses, and interviews with filmmakers and actors. The magazine is independently operated from New York City with no financial ties to any film studios or academic institutions.
Cinema journal Publishes essays on a wide variety of subjects from (using) diverse methodological perspectives. A "Professional Notes" section informs Society for Cinema and Media Studies members about upcoming events, research opportunities, and the latest published research.
Film & History: An Interdisciplinary Journal Film & History is a non-profit, peer-reviewed journal affiliated with the American Historical Association. Published continuously since 1971, it is one of the oldest journals in its field. It publishes two issues annually: Summer (July) and Winter (December).
Film Comment The journal of the Film Society of Lincoln Center
Film International Film International covers film culture as part of the broader culture, history and economy of society. Addresses topics of contemporary relevance from historically informed perspectives. "We wish to bridge the gap between the academy and the outside world, and encourage the participation of scholars from a variety of disciplines, as well as journalists, freelance writers, activists and film-makers."
The journal of popular film and television Examines commercial film and TV. Peer-reviewed
Literature/film quarterly Literature Film Quarterly is the longest-standing journal of international adaptation studies. Though we often feature articles that deal with text-to-film relationships and processes of storytelling, our journal has recently expanded to encompass many forms of intertextual and multimedia retellings, reimagining, remakes, and intersections across histories, literature, and cultures.

Fims for the Feminist Classroom
An online, open-access journal, publishes film reviews that explore the value of films as pedagogical tools in the feminist classroom.
Paper Tiger TV
Paper Tiger Television, through the collaborative efforts of artists, activists and scholars, has pioneered experimental, innovative and truly alternative community media since 1981. An early innovator in video art and public access television of the early 80’s, PTTV developed a unique, handmade, irreverent aesthetic that experimented with the television medium by combining art, academics, politics, performance and live television.
Dyke TV Records - Smith College
The Dyke TV records contain show master tapes, raw footage, and DVD dubs for Dyke TV programs. The materials cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to lesbians in sports, artists, gay pride, childhood and coming-of-age stories, political issues, gay and lesbian civil rights, sexuality, incarcerated women, lesbian parenting, HIV/AIDS and other health issues, incest survivors, lesbian domestic violence, and women's rights.
