The Zora Neale Hurston Trust held the inaugural Zora Neale Hurston Summit on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, 2025 on Barnard’s campus in honor of Hurston’s “life, legacy, and work” as a writer and anthropologist. In coordinating the summit, the ZNH trust aimed to "bring Zora's literary contributions to life, celebrate her anthropological work, showcase her gift of storytelling in the oral tradition, illuminate her connections to pop culture, honor her significant theatrical strides, and reveal her overall influence on artists, academics, and everyday people from all walks of life". The two-day summit was a multidisciplinary event celebrating the arts, humanities, and culture, and featured self-guided art exhibits, theater and music performances, and panel discussions of Hurston’s recent posthumous novel, “The Life of Herod the Great,” which was published on Jan. 7. Over 30 Hurston Family members were also in attendance.
