Disability Justice: A Reader's Guide: Zines

Functionally Ill is Laura-Marie's perzine on mental illness and economic instability. Laura Marie, a mixed-race woman with psychological disorders and no health insurance, writes about her romantic relationships, manic and depressive states, and navigating the public medical system in California. Over the years her diagnosis changes from bipolar disorder to schizoaffective disorder. Issues 13 and 14 include interviews and conversations with friends and her boyfriend about various conditions such as schizophrenia, the desire to self-harm, Narcolepsy, and OCD. The author is involved in the Icarus Project, a radical organization that seeks to change the way people approach "madness" and mental disorders. In later issues the author begins the process of applying for disability-based social security benefits and Medicaid.

Comics and short stories of the daily lives of people with chronic conditions. Includes suggestions for how friends and family can support people struggling with chronic pain stemming from a wide variety of sources: Crohns disease, irritable bowel syndrome, panic disorders, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, musculoskeletal dysfunction, chronic pelvic pain, and others.

JC is a librarian in Washington, DC who writes about her experience growing up with rheumatoid arthritis in the zine series Tributaries. She also compiles the zine Collide, featuring stories on the intersection of physical and mental illness.

Kerri, a zinester in her late twenties, writes about her experiences as a person with an increasing hearing loss since early childhood. The zine touches on a wide range of topics related to her disability, from health insurance and hearing aids to what it's like to socialize as a deaf person. Kerri attempts to provide a more holistic representation of the deaf experience with lists like "the top 5 things you didn't realize are super annoying for peeps with hearing loss" and tips for how one can best interact with and include deaf people in conversation. Later on in the run, issues have thematic topics, like zine tour stories (issue 6) or relationships (issue 8). In issue five, Kerri interviews her mother about raising a deaf child during a time where there was little to no medical information on the disability.

All in Your Head is a queer/feminist cut-and-paste style zine with a focus on LGBTQIA neurodivergent and disabled activists, zinesters, artists, and authors. Editor Sam presents perspectives from queer friends who have experiences with borderline personality disorder, suicidal ideation, and disability. No. 3 includes essays, photography, and poetry by various contributors.
